“Curiously, that title didn’t make it onto Netflix,” Nicole remarked to People.
Amid the myriad of viewing choices this week, Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron’s new Netflix romantic comedy, A Family Affair, stands out as a must-watch.
Debuting on the streaming platform last Friday, the film showcases Nicole as an author grappling with an intricate dilemma: she finds herself enamored with a film star, portrayed by Zac, who incidentally is her daughter’s employer. Joey King assumes the role of Nicole’s daughter.
The title, A Family Affair, is undeniably apt. However, Nicole and Zac recently divulged that the film initially bore a more provocative title — one far from reserved.
During a discussion with People last week, the actors disclosed that the original title was Motherf****r.
“Censored, of course,” Kidman added. “Strangely, it didn’t make it to the Netflix title.”
Zac mentioned that the original title piqued his curiosity when he first encountered the script.
“That title kept the script at the forefront of my mind,” he shared with People. “It made me wonder, what on Earth could this be about?”
In that same interview, Nicole lauded Zac for being enthusiastic about portraying a narrative involving an older woman romantically involved with a younger man.
“The issue lies in the lack of diverse perspectives in storytelling, particularly from women. We need men who are willing to participate,” she expressed to People. “[Zac] was all in, ready to enjoy, engage, and fully support both Joey and me.”
Nicole reiterated this viewpoint during the film’s premiere last month when Variety inquired about the film’s underlying message.
She highlighted the significance of a female writer for the film, which is Carrie Solomon, who made her screenwriting debut with A Family Affair.
“Having a woman pen this story, and witnessing the surge of diverse narratives over the past decade—whether comedies or dramas—through the lens of women, devoid of judgment,” Nicole conveyed to Variety.
A Family Affair is available for streaming on Netflix.
